Breadth Requirements for the Bachelor of Biomedicine
- Students will complete a breadth component of 75 points (six subjects) normally with 25 points (two subjects) taken each year.
- Normally students will take 25 points (two subjects) at each year level i.e.: two 100 level or first year
subjects; two 200 level or second year subjects and two 300 level or third year subjects.
This can be varied to allow students to take up to 37.5 points at 100 level, 25 points at 200 level and 12.5 points at 300 level. - Students must complete at least one 300 level breadth subject which will, in many cases, require prerequisite 100 and 200 level study.
- Students may take all of their 75 points in one breadth discipline (e.g.: 75 points of a language or music studies).
Subjects that may contribute to a student's BBiomed breadth component will be subjects that contrast with science, technology and Engineering Systems, or integrate these studies with humanities and social sciences so that the subject encompasses a much broader arena of knowledge and skills. (e.g. University Breadth Subjects).
Breadth Study Available for BBiomed Students:
- University Breadth Subjects;
- Non Core subjects taken as breadth;
- English as a Second Language subjects;
- Subjects offered in the core of the BA, with the exception of some Psychology subjects and those Geography subjects that are offered in the core of the BSc; Six Psychology subjects have been specifically designated as breadth for BBiomedicine - Personality & Social Psychology, Advanced Personality & Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personal & Social Development, Applied Psychology, and Social-Cultural Dynamics;
- Subjects offered in the core of the BEnvs, with the exception of subjects contributing to the Science and Engineering Systems majors, and their prerequisite subjects;
- Subjects in the BMus designated as available breadth subjects;
- Subjects offered in the core of the BCom, with the exception of Quantitative Methods subjects, and Financial Mathematics subjects;
- Some subjects designed specifically as breadth for BSc students that contrast with all core offerings in the BSc, in categories such as Communication in the Sciences; and
- The suite of subjects offered by the Department of Information Systems focusing on implementing ICT in organisations.
Subjects in the following areas cannot contribute to the breadth component of the BBiomedicine:
- Subjects in any area of study that contribute to the core of the BBiomedicine and BSc and their major studies, including the natural sciences, behavioural sciences, mathematics, statistics, technology and Engineering Systems, whether an individual subject is offered in the core or not; and
- Psychology, Commerce, Environments and Engineering Systems subject exclusions set out above.
