Breadth Requirements for the Bachelor of Science
- Students will complete a breadth component of 75 points (six subjects).
- Students must take between 12.5 points and 37.5 points as breadth at the 100-Level.
- It is possible for one or two 37.5 point (three subject) sequences or clusters of breadth study to be taken. Students may also take all of their 75 points of breadth in one breadth discipline (e.g.: languages or music).
- Students must complete at least one 300 level breadth subject which will, in many cases, require prerequisite 100 and 200 level study.
Breadth Subjects Available for BSc Students:
- University Breadth Subjects;
- Non Core subjects available as breadth;
- Subjects offered in the BA, with the exception of Psychology and those Geography subjects that are offered in the core of the BSc;
- Subjects offered in the BEnvs, with the exception of subjects contributing to the Science and Engineering Systems cluster of majors, and their prerequisite subjects;
- Subjects offered in the BCom, with the exception of Quantitative Methods subjects and Financial Mathematics subjects;
- Subjects in the BMus designated as available as breadth;
- Some subjects designed specifically as breadth for BSc students that contrast with all core offerings in the BSc, in categories such as Communication in the Sciences;
- Organisational Information Systems subjects taught by the Department of Information Systems;
- English as a Second Language Subjects.
In summary, subjects that may contribute to a student’s BSc breadth study will be subjects that contrast with the science, technology and Engineering Systems subjects, or integrate these studies with the humanities and social sciences so that the subject encompasses a much broader arena of knowledge and skills rather than being science-focussed (e.g. University breadth subjects).
Subjects in the following areas cannot contribute to the breadth component of the BSc:
- Subjects in any area of study that contributes to the core of the BSc and its major studies, including the natural sciences, behavioural sciences, mathematics, statistics, technology and Engineering Systems, whether that individual subject is offered in the core of the BSc or not. For example, in addition to subjects in the core of the BSc, the following subjects would not be permitted as breadth: Constructing Environments (BEnvs), Quantitative Methods I (BCom), and Frontiers of Biomedicine (BBiomed);
- Subjects taught by the School of Social and Environmental Enquiry that may be credited as core, prerequisite or elective subjects to Geography major in the BSc; and
- Subjects taught by the Department of Information Systems that may be credited as core, prerequisite or elective subjects to the Science Informatics major.
