The Specialist Certificate will serve as foundation training for students who work in areas where blood or blood products are transfused. It will introduce the student to the important foundation concepts of patient blood management & the National Healthcare Standards relating to blood. The Specialist Certificate will provide the student with specific skills/information they require to participate in the accreditation process for blood and blood products.
It will also serve as a pathway into the existing Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice which is designed to give further training on the more advanced concepts of blood management.

Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
either
-
a degree in medicine, or an undergraduate degree in an allied health profession or equivalent, or
-
at least five years of documented relevant work experience;
-
also applicants must be employed in a relevant area of transfusion practice or blood management.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
2. In ranking and/or assessing applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- prior academic qualification and performance; and
- the professional experience.
3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university's English language requirements for postgraduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 is required.

Intended learning outcomes
At the completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Comprehend the basic haematology processes, pathophysiology, investigation and treatment of diseases that affect Blood and Blood product selection
- Be aware of the process of transfusion from donation to administration
- Understand the relevant quality systems and principles relating to Blood and Blood Products
- Be aware of quality transfusion policies and clinical risk management issues
- Understand practical aspects of transfusion improvement such as audit and data analysis
Generic skills
Achieve a capacity for independent critical thought, rational inquiry and self-directed learning;
Demonstrated academic writing skills, presentation skills, problem solving skills, risk assessment & management skills. An ability to incorporate evidence based theoretical principles and concepts into professional practice.
