This subject focuses primarily on the history of the African American Jazz tradition. It also has a practical component where students are expected to demonstrate various skills on their instrument and show an understanding of relevant concepts pertaining to the performance of African ÂAmerican Jazz. The practical aspect of this subject will happen within the small ensemble.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students should have acquired
- an ability to understand and perform a select body of wellknown works taken from the African-American jazz idiom;
- the ability to grasp current musical languages used in the idiom and apply them practically;
- a reasonable knowledge of the relevant recordings available;
- the skills to discern between the various genres which purport to come under the banner of jazz.
Generic skills
Upon completion of this subject students should be able to:
• Exhibit extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of their discipline including relevant professional knowledge, skills, discipline and ethics as they relate to the practising musician
• Demonstrate an open and independent attitude towards contemporary cultural developments
• Demonstrate a flexible and innovative approach to the challenges for the professional musician in the 21st century
• Critically and creatively engage with topics of cultural significance across the broader community
• Work at various levels, both individually and as a team member, in a wide variety of musical environments
• Understand and appreciate how the arts connect with the broader society and culture
• Be prepared to undertake postgraduate study.
