This subject involves the development and application of the tools of bioinformatics to address a significant research problem. The subject also provides students with skills and knowledge for understanding original research and enhanced written and oral communication skills.
The process of matching students with supervisors and research projects will occur in the first semester of enrolment of the Bioinformatics stream of the Master of Science. Apart from the help and guidance from their supervisor(s) each student also has a committee that regularly meets with them and provides additional help and expertise. This committee is responsible for assessment of the research project subject.
Students need to ensure they have completed a total of 50 points Research Project by the end of their course.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing this subject, students will have skills in the:
- critical appraisal of scientific literature;
- planning of research;
- development and application of bioinformatics tools in the analysis of scientific data;
- writing research proposals, reports and a thesis.
At the completion of this subject, students will gain skills in:
- articulating the breadth of knowledge gained in a particular discipline;
- critically evaluating the data and interpretation of data presented in scientific papers;
- developing the ability to exercise critical judgement;
- expressing persuasive intellectual arguments
- rigorous and independent thinking;
- managing time and competing deadlines;
- writing research reports;
- giving oral presentations.
