This subject introduces students to the specialty areas of dental practice related to the provision of complex dental care including fixed prosthodontics and implants, clinical prosthodontics including crowns and bridges, overdentures and clinical endodontics. Students will learn about the principles and clinical and laboratory techniques associated with these areas of clinical dental practice.

Intended learning outcomes

Students should:



  • be able to perform an endodontic examination;
  • be able to formulate an accurate endodontic diagnosis;
  • have developed skills to assess the endodontic case difficulty and be able to decide if a patient should be referred;
  • be able to perform endodontic treatment in more complicated cases;
  • have developed further clinical skills in restoring broken down teeth with indirect restorations – full coverage fused metal crowns, all metal crowns, direct core build up and cast post cores;
  • be able to apply the principles of osseointegration of implants;
  • be familiar with different implant components and their usage in a clinical setting;
  • have developed skills in providing patient centred care to patients requiring complex restorative procedures.

Generic skills

Students should:

  1. be able to access new knowledge from different sources, analyse and interpret it in a critical manner
  2. develop skills in effective communication with teaching staff and peers
  3. develop effective organizational skills and time management
  4. develop skills in team work and develop skills of workplace safety
  5. be able to identify and address their own learning needs.
