This subject is designed for Master of Teaching students  interested in gaining experience in an international setting. Students  will complete an internship where they will choose to participate in either (a) a two week staff-guided international internship program at one of a suite of three schools, or (b) an independent internship from a list of schools/institutions with which the university has an agreement.

Each of the international internship options provides students with opportunities to experience the full life of a school/institution in another country, through immersion in day to day activities. Students  will work alongside educators in each school/institution to make a contribution to the learning programs, through collaborative and collegial engagement. The written component of this subject will provide students with opportunities to reflect upon the experiences, challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning in an international school/institution.

As placement numbers and sites will vary from year to year, applicants for this subject will be required to submit an expression of interest during Semester 1 when a selection process will take place. Students will be required to fund aspects of the cost of the trip and may be eligible to apply for a Melbourne Global Scholars Award.

 

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the subject students should have developed:



  • Understanding of how principles of learning and teaching are applied in an international educational context;
  • Capacity to draw on the internship experience to reflect on educational philosophies, values and practices;
  • Critical understanding of the importance of effective communication and collaboration with professionals within an international educational context;
  • Ability to examine a range of issues related to learning and teaching in the international education context in which the teaching occurred; and
  • Understanding of how to work in cross-cultural settings.
