The subject will provide Masters-level training in desktop, field and/or laboratory techniques that serve as preparation for the completion of a capstone subject in the Master of Geography. Students will choose a topic area/project from a list provided by School of Geography academic staff.

Intended learning outcomes

This subject will provide students with technical and academic training in a specific area of geography applicable to either industry or research. This will comprise training in a specific research method(s) and the processing, presentation and interpretation of the data. For example, in the physical geography area, students may carry out a small field-based project (lake sediment coring), then process and analyse samples, followed by interpretation of the results. In the human geography area, students may be provided with a population census dataset from which they may be required to distil specific information on demographic patterns, and to then analyse and interpret those patterns.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject students will have gained experience in:

  • understanding the rationale for undertaking a specific research project;
  • the application of geographic methods to a specific research problem;
  • working as part of a research team;
  • critical, independent thinking;
  • problem-solving of practical challenges;
  • data processing, organisation and presentation;
  • data interpretation
  • written presentation skills
