Students explore all aspects of choral and ensemble singing, from the purely technical (intonation, breathing, listening, pronunciation, vocal attacks, legato) to the subtleties of developing internal choral relationships and relationships with conductors and where appropriate, instrumentalists. Singers will develop an awareness of style, historical context and connections across the breadth of choral repertoire, sacred and secular, from the 13th to the 21st century.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- Show technical and musical development as choral and ensemble singers
- Participate with skill and confidence as a member of a performing group
- Perform selected repertoire to a high standard
- Identify and exhibit knowledge of a range of ensemble repertoire and skills
- Exhibit an informed respect for the values and principles of ensemble performance
- Articulate an informed personal reaction to music
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a capacity to think critically and independently and to apply this to their ensemble singing
- Study and realise selected repertoire relevant to the ensemble to performance standard
- Apply time and people management skills to their rehearsal and performance preparation
- Demonstrate good independence, leadership and teamwork skills in rehearsal and performance

Assessment
Additional details
This subject is assessed on a pass/fail basis.
- Weekly preparation of parts, individual and/or sectional practice and active contribution to all rehearsals and performances as directed (Ongoing, 100%)
Hurdle Requirement: 100% weekly punctual and full attendance at all rehearsals and performances as directed is expected. Less than 80% attendance will result in a fail.
