This subject is designed to extend from the undergraduate training in research design and statistics. This subject will explore common research methods for applied settings. This will include qualitative, quantitative, and experimental designs. The topics will cover: selection of the appropriate research type for particular research problems, the methodological issues of various research designs, sampling, analysis, and reporting of research findings.

In addition to arming students with the knowledge to be able to evaluate and conduct research designs in applied settings, this subject will also assist in designing students’ own research projects.

Intended learning outcomes

  • To be able to determine the most appropriate type of research for various applied problems
  • Critically evaluate research designs
  • Determine the most appropriate analysis methods for various research designs
  • Understand the range of research methodologies used in applied settings and the challenges of applied research
