Graduates of a MIR (Chemistry) will have:
- Advanced knowledge of research and regulatory principles and methods applicable to the chemical industry.
- Advanced scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding of recent developments in industrial chemical research.
- Cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and solve problems related to the chemical industry.
- Cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex new ideas and concepts at both abstract and applied levels.
- Technical and communication skills to aarticulate, evaluate and disseminate the methods and results of industrial scientific research.
- Cognitive skills to identify and affirm the principles of ethical scientific practice.

Masters of Industrial Research degrees at the University of Melbourne seek to develop graduates who have a capacity for defining and managing an industry focused research project characterised by originality, independence and industrial relevance.
