This subject will examine the rapidly changing landscape of the international development sector, and the critical role of management and leadership in addressing challenges as they emerge. Some of the challenges that will be explored include the increasing number, duration and severity of humanitarian emergencies; the humanitarian-development divide; increasing emphasis on accountability; the emergence of new actors in the international development space; and the localisation of development and humanitarian assistance. Students will consider the implications of strong or poor management and leadership practice on being able to address those challenges. Students will work through a process of identifying existing leadership and management gaps and proposing changes in the way that managers and leaders currently operate.
Intended learning outcomes
Learning outcomes of this subject are as follows:
- To identify the key challenges facing the global international development sector
- To develop the ability to analyse and determine the range of appropriate management and leadership responses to these challenges
- To demonstrate knowledge of a variety of management and leadership approaches and frameworks
- To demonstrate development of skills in reflexivity and how it impacts on their management and leadership attributes and approaches
