This subject will focus on essential skills and techniques central to effective management and leadership. This very practical subject will feature a strong emphasis on ensuring students understand how to use the skills and techniques being discussed. The subject will encompass both hard and soft skills essential to developing strong leadership. Soft skills will include conflict resolution, decision making, confidence and communication. Hard skills will include project management, risk analysis and assessing performance and learning (both staff/team performance and projects). Students will be placed in small groups for the duration of the subject, and will liaise with their professional development mentor throughout the course via simulated challenges to test students’ learnings. This subject will provide practical learning opportunities to demonstrate that management and leadership practices can be learned and refined. Critical self-reflection will be a strong component of this subject.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Describe the soft and hard skills required in good management and leadership
- Reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses in relation to the scope of soft and hard skills and identify the steps that need to be taken to build on strengths and improve areas of weaknesses
- Design a program considering all the aspects of the design process including setting program objectives and outcomes, how success will be measured, how program will be staffed, and how risks will be assessed
- Make management and leadership decisions using industry tools and guidance
- Resolve conflict with a confident and structured approach
- Demonstrate confidence in their ability to inspire and lead others in a program setting
