This subject will be delivered through a series of workshops, seminars and lectures. In preparation for entry into the dance industry the emphasis will be on potential career pathways in dance and dance-allied professions. The course will identify strategies for sustaining personal practice as a dance artist and managing career transitions. The course will also cover grant application writing and project management (focusing especially on responsible budgeting), CV preparation and contractual, legal and ethical issues as they relate to the dance artist.
In order to successfully complete this subject, students are normally expected to undertake additional self-directed study or written/reflective work for 3 hours per week.
Intended learning outcomes
This subject will enable the student to:
- Develop strong writing skills.
- Extend knowledge of the dance sector and its interdependencies.
- Research, analyse and present information related to dance organisations.
- Gain a deeper understanding of personal values and beliefs, as well as talents and passions within dance and the performing arts.
- Conceptualise an artistic project and write a grant application seeking funding to support it.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- Identify a range of national and international dance organisations and their role in the dance sector
- Research, analyse and present information related to dance organisations
- Confidently prepare both a CV and Resume and understand the differences between them
- Reflect on personal values and beliefs to help determine career objectives
- Work collaboratively to scope artistic projects
- Prepare a grant application
- Understand the nature of career pathways and transitions that may be encountered in the dance sector
