This subject introduces students to the interdependence of voice and body. The unit addresses idiosyncratic habits, which may inhibit the moving and speaking performer in order to develop a functional, efficient and flexible body and voice. This subject will include a selection from the following: physical awareness of breath in the body; muscularity; resonance; active listening and kinaesthetic awareness; and fundamental patterns of physical organization. To enable this introduction students will undertake physical improvisation, dynamic imagery and rhythmical play to activate sensory perception. This unit is co-delivered to BFA Acting and BFA Theatre students.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Recognise the relationship of breath, body, voice, mind and physical presence
  • Demonstrate the vocal & physical capacity to respond impulsively and imaginatively to exercises and tasks
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others in creative and performance contexts

  • Practical Assessment - Studio Work: includes development, rehearsal, performance and evaluation of material. (Includes 8 hours Taught Class Time, and 8 Hours Individual Preparation/Warm up per week) (4000 word equivalent). Weekly. 50% (ILO1)
  • Practical Assessment - Individual Presentation (1600 word equivalent). Week 6. 20%. (ILO2)
  • Practical assessment - Assigned tasks in Group Presentations (2400 word equivalent). Week 12. 30%. (ILO3)
  • Hurdle requirements: Students must attend 80% of all scheduled classes and attempt all elements of assessment to be eligible for a pass in this subject
