In this subject, students will develop an understanding of research in education, as part of their capstone experience. This subject aims to build the methodological literacy of students and advance their skills to understand and critically analyse complex educational problems. Students will undertake coursework focusing on: what constitutes research in education; common methodologies and methods in education research; the management and analysis of data; and the fundamentals of critical thinking and writing. Students will develop insight into common approaches to research in education and will consider how principles of research can inform professional practice. They will develop the skills to interpret educational research propositions and findings from educational research. This subject provides students with an understanding of research principles and methods applicable to a range of educational contexts and practices.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Critically analyse major theoretical approaches used in the conduct of educational research by comparing and contrasting research designs in education
- Critique the strengths and limitations of various research methods with reference to their applicability, validity and interpretations.
- Analyse, synthesise and critique a selected research design relevant to education research
- Apply enhanced critical thinking and writing skills when reviewing research from methodological point of view
Generic skills
On completion of the subject, students will be able to;
- Understand a range of research practices more fully;
- Understand the dependence of research results on the methodology and analytical framework employed.
- Read academic work with an increased critical capacity.

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
Completion of 150 points of study in the MC-ED Master of Education, MC-TESOL Master of TESOL, or MC-MLED Master of Modern Languages Education;
or
Completion of 50 points of study in one of the following: 695AA, 960AC, 960IB, G01SW, MC-EDEDMGT, MC-EDIBDP, MC-EDIBDPO, MC-EDIBPY, MC-LIT, MC-LITEDUC, MC-MLEA, MC-MLEB, MC-NUM, MC-TESOLA, MC-TESOLB.
Corequisites
MC-ED Master of Education, MC-MLED Master of Modern Languages Education, and MC-TESOL Master of TESOL students must take this subject together with:
