Using the best available evidence to ensure that educational programs for healthcare professionals are reliable, appropriate and effective is crucial to providing a quality learning experience. This subject assists participants to critically analyse the research underpinning their clinical teaching and examines research approaches best suited to undertaking clinical education research.
Intended learning outcomes
By completing this subject, participants should be able to:
- understand key principles and concepts in the design of clinical education research
- identify key sources of research evidence that underpin clinical education
- critically analyse the design and methodology of published research on clinical education
- outline the elements of clinical education research that make it reliable and valid
Generic skills
After completing this subject, participants should be able to:
- apply theories and principles to the analysis of clinical education research;
- access and use relevant research literature;
- identify and implement best practice in clinical education research;
- demonstrate understanding of the subject in concise oral and written formats

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education (GD-CLINED) or the Master of Clinical Education (MC-CLINED). This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

Assessment
Additional details
- 10 minute group (3-4 participants) oral presentation - 500 words equivalent per participant, due mid-semester, (20%)
- Preparation of a mock research grant using a structured ‘application form’. Participants will need to describe their research idea and the methodological approaches, including simple budget and ethics approval requirements, for how to best answer their research question - 2,000 words, due end of semester, (80%)
