Students will be placed in University of Melbourne orchestral ensembles for intensive training in all aspects pertaining to performing in a large ensemble setting. A focused approach to the rehearsal, recording, and performance of a broad range of works from across the symphonic canon and new works will be addressed through the guidance of specialist staff. Other topics addressed will include rehearsal conduct/etiquette and knowledge of performance styles.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- understand and demonstrate the breadth of skills required to perform and record as a member of a symphony orchestra, and the standard to which a professional is held
- communicate appropriately with a conductor and other members of the orchestra
- understand and demonstrate the breadth of performance styles necessary for the symphonic canon and demonstrate an ability to perform in multiple styles with direction
- demonstrate an awareness of, and ability to perform in, differing performance styles for repertoire throughout history
- demonstrate an understanding of a broad range of orchestral works throughout history
- demonstrate artistic flexibility in musical performances
- perform in accompanying roles
- demonstrate an understanding of how to approach new works without direction
- work collaboratively with other musicians
- demonstrate collegial communication skills
