Students learn about professional orchestral auditions from both sides of the screen: as auditioner and as committee member. Students will further develop their understanding of how to select and perform appropriate concerti for orchestral auditions, sharpen their skills performing a larger suite of more advanced orchestral excerpts, and will perform a final round audition of their own. Knowledge, understandings, and insight into auditions procedures and how complex artistic decisions are made will be gained through practice serving on audition panels.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Discuss how orchestral excerpts for all instruments demonstrate an ability to perform accurately and flexibly;
- Recall, classify, and explain major works from which common audition excerpts have been extracted;
- Develop the confidence necessary to perform to a professional standard under pressure in audition, recording, and performance settings;
- Interpret musical works in ways that could suit a variety of elite performance situations; and
- Understand and develop the mental and emotional capabilities necessary for consistent skill execution and positive performance experiences.
