Students in this subject will undertake focused study of a large-scale operatic role suitable for their voice-type and stage of development. Students will receive weekly group coaching on a timetabled basis, consisting of lyric diction, style, interpretation and staging as if preparing for an audition at a major opera company. Students will gain historical knowledge of their chosen opera and role, and the history of its performance, including notable historical performers and performances.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate skills in stagecraft, style, vocal technique, and lyric diction commensurate to the achievement of a major operatic role;
  • research the origins and historical significance of key operatic roles;
  • evaluate and critique dramatic historical interpretations of operatic roles.
