In this subject, students will apply the theoretical knowledge from Applied Pathophysiology and Nursing Specialty 1 and Nursing Specialty 2 (Cardiorespiratory) to support comprehensive patient assessment, monitoring and care planning in nursing practice. Students will learn to incorporate knowledge and evidence of psychosocial factors influencing patient outcomes to inform their clinical decision making in practice.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will engage in their field of specialty practice and demonstrate competency in the specialty through the:
- Integration of core principles covered in the subject and its pre-requisite, Applied Pathophysiology and Nursing Speciality 2 (Cardiac & Respiratory), to further develop practice knowledge and skills for comprehensive cardiac and respiratory assessment and monitoring
- Application of knowledge and skills to recognise, prioritise and respond to patients experiencing acute alterations or an acute exacerbation of their cardiac and respiratory condition/s
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing interventions for patients with cardiac and respiratory diseases to ensure the delivery of safe nursing care that is informed by evidence-based research
- Application of skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, reflective practice and self-directed learning to the delivery of specialist cardiac and respiratory nursing practice.
Generic skills
- A capacity to develop problem-solving and analytical skills
- A capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in verbal and written modes of communication;
- A capacity to translate new knowledge learned to nursing practice; and
- An ability to critically evaluate research and implement evidence-based finding to inform nursing practice.

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
To enrol in this subject, students must have successfully completed Applied Pathophysiology. This subject can be undertaken concurrently with Nursing Specialty 1.

Knowledge of health sciences relating to anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology at a degree level of 7

Time commitment details
Students are also required to complete 45 hours of independent study for reading and preparatory work, including preparation for the Clinical Skills Asessment, Clinical Performance Apprasial, and completion of written assessments.
