This is a public health and clinical subject for health professionals working or hoping to work in the area of sexual and reproductive health. It covers the following topics: sexually transmissible infections and blood borne viruses (prevention and screening, diagnosis and treatment), contraceptive choices for women during their reproductive life and the theory and rationale behind the screening for cervical cancer. This subject is focused on the clinical and practical aspects of providing sexual and reproductive health clinical services within the Australian health care setting.
Students who are Division 1 nurses and have current registration in Australia and who complete this subject successfully are able to undertake additional training to become accredited as nurse cervical screening providers and accredited HIV and Hep C test advisors.
This clinical accreditation is not part of the subject but can only be undertaken when this subject has been completed. This additional training is run by by Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Alfred Health, not the University of Melbourne.
Intended learning outcomes
On completing this subject students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main clinical issues relevant to health professionals in providing sexual and reproductive health services.
Generic skills
At the end of this subject students are expected to have developed critical thinking and analytical skills, an ability to find, evaluate and use relevant information, written communication skills and problem solving skills.

Additional details
- One-page written policy document due 1 weeks after theoretical classroom teaching (10%)
- Four short answer questions: 2000 words total ie 500 words each due 2 weeks after theoretical classroom teaching (20%)
- 1 essay of 1500 words due one week after the end of semester (35%)
- Written reflective piece on public health approaches to clinical service development (after visit and tour of MSHC, clinical STI service) due one week after the end of semester (35%)

Special Computer Requirements: Students are required to have access to a computer with e-mail application, Web browser and CD ROM facility. Technical support is not available from the University of Melbourne in setting up such a system.
Special Computer Skills: Students will be expected to be proficient with a Web browser, e-mail application and word processing application prior to enrolment in this subject.
