The Master of Education degree by Research is directed at practising professionals in a broad range of fields related to education who want to develop expertise in educational research.
Those undertaking this research degree, will undertake an independent research study. Students will first complete the coursework component of the degree which has been designed to assist the student to prepare a defensible research proposal. The proposal will then form the basis of the independent research investigation. It is expected that students will complete a 30,000 word thesis for external examination.
Please note that this course will not provide you with registration to teach in Australia.

Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
• a four-year education degree, or equivalent; or
• an undergraduate degree in any discipline and at least 50 credit points, or equivalent, of graduate study in education or in the relevant discipline to the proposed topic of research.
AND
• a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%), or equivalent.
Meeting this entry requirements does not guarantee selection.
2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
• prior academic performance.
3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 7 is required.
Note:
Successful applicants with the following may be granted 50 credit points of advanced standing towards the 50-credit point coursework component:
• a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research (GC-EDRES) from the University of Melbourne, with a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%); or
• a Master of Education (MC-ED) from the University of Melbourne, with completion of the 50-credit point Research Pathway subjects with a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%); or
• a Master of Teaching from the University of Melbourne, with completion of the 50-credit point Research Pathway subjects with a weighted average mark of at least H2A (75%);
And
• the support of a principal supervisor.

Assessment may include the outcomes of tasks completed in collaboration with other students.

Intended learning outcomes
- Advanced theoretical understanding and knowledge of current research, debates, policies and practices within a specialised area to identify a knowledge gap
- Advanced knowledge of educational research principles and methods to design a defensible research study
- Advanced understanding of the ethical implications of designing and conducting research investigations within an educational context and/or to address an educational problem
- Advanced cognitive and technical skills to plan and successfully execute a substantial piece of research that makes a contribution to knowledge
- Advanced written skills to present a theoretically sound and methodologically defensible research investigation
- Communication and technical skills to present a coherent and sustained argument and to disseminate research findings to the wider academic community as well as other professional practitioners

Graduate attributes
The course will develop in students a commitment to research excellence in education, allowing them to develop a critical understanding of their discipline, the process of research, and their capacities as critical, creative, competent and ethical researchers.
Graduates of the Master of Education by Research will have the necessary attributes to:
- Evaluate contemporary educational issues and educational research to inform educational practice and policies
- Contribute to discussions and debates associated with the role of educational research in addressing contemporary local, national and global issues
- Be creative, innovative, self directed and lifelong learners, able to link theory and practice and respond to the changing educational landscape (integrity and self awareness)
Course structure
The first stage of the Master of Education (960BA) consists of 50 credit points of coursework.
Candidates must complete the following compulsory subjects:
- Education Research Methodology, 12.5 points; and
- Education Research Design, 37.5 points
Full time candidates complete their coursework component over 6 months; part time students over 12 months.
Candidates must achieve an average of at least H2A (75%) average in the coursework component to proceed to the thesis.
The second stage of the program consists of a 30,000 word thesis.
- Candidates enrol in a thesis subject and undertake a research project for the remaining duration of the degree.
- The thesis can be completed in 12 months, but a six month extension is available to those who have not quite finished but otherwise made good progress.
- In the six months prior to submission of their thesis candidates must present their research findings at a public completion seminar attended by their Advisory Committee.
- Candidates will be examined on the basis of their thesis which is examined externally. The thesis should normally be 30,000 words in length excluding tables, illustrations and bibliography.
- To be eligible to submit a thesis for examination, candidates must be enrolled in their course for the minimum period of 6 months full-time equivalent.
- Refer to the University policy library and the Graduate Research Hub for further information regarding candidature, academic progress, ethics, thesis preparation and examination.

Graduates from this program are eligible to apply for entry to the Doctor of Education (DEd) program or a PhD provided they meet the respective minimum entry requirements. Meeting these minimum entry requirements does not automatically guarantee entry to the DEd or PhD.
