Overview

Entry requirements

(1) In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:

• An undergraduate degree in an appropriate scientific discipline (Computational Biology, Biology and Biomedicine; Computer Science; Physics; Mathematics and Statistics), with a course weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%); and
• Prerequisite subject MAST10005 Calculus 1 or equivalent.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.

(2) In ranking applications, the selection committee will consider prior academic performance.

(3) The selection committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.

(4) Applicants are required to satisfy the University’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

Course structure

Without advanced standing students must complete a total of 300 credit points.

Students may be awarded up to 100 points of advanced standing based upon their undergraduate studies. In particular, students who have completed a major in Computational Biology in their undergraduate degree will be awarded 100 points of advanced standing and will need complete 200 credit points. Students must complete MAST30032 and MAST30033 if they have not done so in their previous studies.

All students will be required to undertake an industry or academic project, equivalent to 25 points. Outstanding students (with an average of at least 80% in associated coursework subjects in the course) may replace the project with a research project (equivalent to 50 points) or elect to undertake both (equating to a total of 75 points).

Research Project Options (50 points total)

Students will undertake a research project for a total of 50 points. The research project comprises of a series of two or three consecutive subject parts. The following research project structures are possible. Students will determine which stream they follow in consultation with the project coordinator.

5. Computational Biology Discipline Subjects (50 - 100 points)

Students will select between 50 – 100 points of elective subjects. Of this, student must take at least 37.5 points of the following subjects:

The remaining value of the 50 – 100 points of Computational Biology Discipline Subjects can be taken from the above listed subjects or, on approval of the course coordinator, subjects from the Master of Data Science, the Master of Science (Computer science), the Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics), the Master of Science (Biosciences), the Master of Science (Physics), the Master of Science (Epidemiology) and the Master of Engineering (Biomedical).
