Students will nominate a research topic from a list provided by the subject coordinator. The student will be introduced to ethical considerations, how to complete a literature review and scientific writing styles, methods for the analysis and appraisal of other published work, and scientific Levels of Evidence. Students will learn to summarise their aims, hypotheses and methods. All students are required to produce a manuscript in the form of a scientific paper suitable for submission to an international peer-reviewed publication.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Analyse and critically interpret research evidence
- Apply a high standard of scientific reasoning
- Devise and implement a research program that investigates specific hypotheses.
- Understand the basic statistical tests relevant to the research project and apply these accordingly
- Demonstrate the skills to communicate scientific evidence in the form of a scientific manuscript and oral presentation
On completion of this subject students should show:
- an ability to evaluate and synthesise information in a flexible manner
- a capacity to articulate their knowledge in both oral and written formats
- ability to enter and analyse data using Excel and MINITAB
