This subject builds on the basic paediatric assessment skills gained in Paediatric Audiology A. Students will have the opportunity to learn the principles and practice of audiological assessment of children of all ages. In particular, they will refine and expand their understanding of advanced paediatric testing techniques; educational and communication issues for hearing impaired children; assessment and management of children with special needs; assessment and management of hearing impaired neonates and infants.
Supervised clinical experience will be obtained in the diagnosis and management of hearing disorders in children of all ages.
Intended learning outcomes
At the completion of this subject the students should be able to:
- obtain accurate audiometric results from children of all ages, including those with developmental and/or behavioural problems and/or significant hearing loss;
- adapt their behaviour in the clinic to effectively manage children and best advise and support their parents;
- analyse, interpret and integrate test results and be able to formulate appropriate management and intervention strategies
- handle a complicated clinical history, give appropriate feedback to parents
- write well-constructed clinical reports; and
- demonstrate analytical skills by incorporating the theoretical principles of clinical decision making.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate:
- critical thinking, analytical and problem solving skills
- the ability to integrate theory and practice and to apply this in novel situations
- an openness to new ideas
- planning and time management skills
- the ability to communicate their knowledge in both oral and written form

A two-hour written examination, end of semester 2, 40% (Hurdle)
Clinical Portfolio (3 assessments)
1. Students will complete a reflective piece and set learning goals/strategies to attain desired learning outcome, due Week 2 Semester 1 (Hurdle)
2. Present an oral progress review mid-year incorporating evidence from the clinical diary – (5 minutes), due end of Semester 1 (Hurdle)
3. For each paediatric clinical placement, students will be required to complete a clinical diary which documents the progression towards the students learning goals and a set of prescribed clinical skills . Students will submit their clinical diary including an executive summary at the end of Semester 2 (2000 words). On the same day, they will also be required to present a 5-minute oral progress review incorporating evidence from the clinical diary (Hurdle)
A case study assignment (500 words) due early semester 2, during the semester, 10%
A clinical examination consisting of the assessment of children (10 minute oral presentation (equivalent)), during semester 2, 10% (Hurdle)
A clinical skills assessment by OSCE (4 stations of 7 minutes each), due end of Semester 1, 20%
An oral exam including a clinical skills assessment conducted at the end of semester 2 (exam period) (Two 20-minute stations), 20% (Hurdle)
Hurdle requirements: All hurdle assessments must be passed to pass the subject
