The subject provides a broad overview of a range of topics relevant to the Australian construction industry, including the regulatory framework, construction materials and technology, construction documentation, geotechnical engineering, building structures, construction management and economics, and building inspections and faults. Building mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire, transportation and communication services and controls are also covered. The subject addresses issues in the context of residential, commercial and industrial buildings, and includes site visits.
The intention of this subject is to provide a broad introduction to the industry, with construction systems base, including an introduction to planning and scheduling, soil conditions, cost estimating and project management. The subject is intended for students entering the Master of Property program with no, or at least a very limited, construction background. This subject is not available to any students who have already completed 25 points of construction technology based or equivalent studies.
Intended learning outcomes
The subject utilises a flipped classroom approach, providing online learning resources a month prior to the intensive mid-semester program. This approach assists with the dissemination of information and knowledge development prior to the applied experience used in the mid-semester intensive.
On successful completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Identify different types of construction industries, distinguish construction systems base for commercial and residential property, and differentiate the professional roles in construction processes.
- Identify, synthesise and evaluate the different construction processes, structures, materials and services and soil conditions.
- Analyse principles of documentation, cost estimating, project management principles, sustainability and evaluate documentation in the construction of simplified cost estimate.
- Synthesise and evaluate the different elements of construction in the application to property professional practice.

Prerequisites
Admission into one of the following:
- MC-PROP Master of Property
- 300pt Program course entry point in the MC-PROP Master of Property
- 702PA Graduate Diploma in Property Valuation
- MC-CMPROP Master of Construction Management/Master of Property
- MC-ARCPROP Master of Architecture/Master of Property
- MC-PROPUP Master of Property/Master of Urban Planning

This subject is not available to any students who have already completed 25 points of construction technology (or equivalent) studies.
