Note : Independent thesis
Students who qualify may propose an independent thesis, supported through supervision by an academic staff member rather than in the context of a studio. Independent thesis proposals must meet the following requirements:
· minimum average mark in studio over the past 12 months at the MSD of 80% (H1) –this is the minimum average required for entry into an M.Phil or PhD program at the University of Melbourne
· a portfolio of design work undertaken at the University of Melbourne
· a research proposal (minimum 300 words)
· proposed supervisor and written agreement from said supervisor that they are willing to supervise the candidate. Supervisors must be full-time members of Architecture staff. Joint supervision may be considered as applicable.
· approval by a selection panel that includes Independent Thesis coordinator, Rory Hyde and the Design Thesis subject coordinator Janet McGaw.
Independent thesis proposals can be used as a framework for design research which does not produce a traditional architectural design outcome. Prior approval for this is required from the Subject Coordinator who may consult with the Program Coordinator and Director of the MSD. Students must demonstrate through a portfolio that they have met minimum professional competencies in prior studios.
Applications must be submitted by email by the Friday before Orientation Week (ie one week before the ballot for Themed Studios). Applications are to be emailed to
Rory Hyde rory.hyde@unimelb.edu.au and Janet McGaw (mcgawjk@unimelb.edu.au).
