The focus of this subject is on applying economic analysis to agricultural trade and agricultural policy, and the affects of these policies on agriculture in Australia. The subject begins with applying principles of microeconomics to inform the analyses and formation of trade and policy choices, including the role of markets, market failure and government failure. Specific policy interventions and mechanisms are explored from historical and current approaches to agricultural trade and agricultural policy. Current developments such as increasing international protectionism, bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, and the role of trading blocs are explored, while recent agricultural policies in Australia and abroad are rigorously appraised.
Intended learning outcomes
- A sound understanding of the microeconomic principles underlying international trade and government policy
- A sound appreciation of the strengths, limits and practical realities of international agricultural trade: the theory, rules and policy
- An appreciation of economic and political environment within which agricultural policies and trade policies are formed
- Capacity to evaluate potential impacts that domestic and international agricultural and trade policies have on Australian agriculture
- Capacity to critically evaluate contemporary agricultural and trade policy debates using the agricultural economics paradigm
