The Integrated Design Studios focus on the successful union of architecture and engineering in building design. With strong involvement from consultants and clients from industry the studios provide an excellent opportunity to experience how design happens in practice in an environment emulating a design office. Students from both disciplines work together to develop building designs for real clients with a focus on sustainable practices, including zero carbon and renewable energy technologies. You will learn how to view design from both engineering and architectural perspectives and express ideas based in well-grounded, informed critical thinking. The studio includes basic building envelope and energy analysis components and engenders development of integrated design skills and understanding able to be employed in building designs in industry. Each studio uses a building typology specific to the industry client involved as a case study. Sustainable integrated design solutions appropriate to the building typology in question will be researched and developed throughout the studios.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- ILO 1. Demonstrate a capacity to research and make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge in sustainable design theory and practice in relation to the building typology being examined.
- ILO 2. Demonstrate critical awareness of how their chosen specialisation or discipline contributes to this body of knowledge and interacts with other disciplines.
- ILO 3. Develop and refine integrated architectural engineering design strategies.
- ILO 4. Demonstrate a high level representational design understanding and present ideas in digital, analogue and other formats.
- ILO 5. Apply critical thinking to the assessment of design proposals, and make changes and improvements based on that assessment through iterative design processes, and technical analysis.
- ILO 6. Design to a level of resolution that demonstrates knowledge of structure, materials and first principle building physics.
- ILO 7. Present, substantiate and advocate for design proposals in a public setting, and accept critique in a constructive manner.
- ILO 8. Engage with and contribute to a multi-disciplinary design office/studio culture.
Generic skills
- Ability to generate and iteratively test design ideas through critical thinking and analysis;
- Ability to work with design precedents;
- Ability to work in design team environments with other disciplines;
- Ability to integrate digital tools into the design generation and development processes;
- Written, verbal and graphic presentation of ideas and understanding/use of design terminology;
- An understanding of ethical design responses to issues;
- Time management and project management; and,
- Constructive acceptance of feedback and criticism in design.
