In this subject, students gain experience in designing a substantial educational research investigation that could be subsequently used to inform the development of a research proposal within a higher research degree. Students negotiate to undertake the completion of a theoretically and methodologically defensible research proposal with assistance from an academic supervisor.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in an area of contemporary research in education
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the purpose of research methodology
- Understand the theoretical context of an issue of concern in education)
- Critically assess the purpose of selected research methodologies
- Identify ethical challenges in the education research process
- Design a significant research project in education
- Communicate the plan for research
- Demonstrate a capacity to engage in reflective, critical discussion of the area of particular interest
Generic skills
This subject will develop the following set of generic skills:
1. Critical reasoning and thinking in educational research
2. Appraisal of education research debates and practices
3. Evaluation and communication of education research and practice

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
Master of Teaching students must complete EDUC90419 prior to EDUC90558 (according to the course structure).
OR
Students in the courses listed below may enrol in EDUC90419 either prior to, or at the same time as EDUC90558 (i.e. concurrently):
- GC-EDRES Graduate Certificate in Educational Research; or
- 960BA Master of Education (by research); or
- MC-ED Master of Education, MC-TESOL Master of TESOL, or MC-MLED Master of Modern Languages Education. Students in the 200 point program must have attained a H2A average or above in the first 150 points of study. Students in the 100-point program must have attained a H2A average or above in the first 50 points of study.
- MC-INSLEAD Master of Instructional Leadership. Students must have attained a H2A average or above in the first 50 points of study.
- Previous Master of Teaching students returning to complete the final 50 points of the Masters. These students must have attained a H2A average or above in the first 150 points of the MC-TEACHEC Master of Teaching (Early Childhood), MC-TEACHSA Master of Teaching (Secondary), or MC-TEACHSI Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship.
