Students will develop the knowledge, competencies and skills necessary to perform music at a professional level. Areas to be covered include advanced study of instrumental or vocal technique in order to cope with all stylistic demands, and
specialisation in all related aspects of music performance. Classes in the repertoire and materials of the instrument will also be undertaken.
In order to contextualise their education within the best practices of local, national and international standards, students are expected to work competently and productively as team members both alone and in groups: for example, participation in individual lessons, performance class, orchestral and/or related ensembles. In order to ensure the highest level of performance preparation, 100% attendance is expected.
NOTE:
To progress from Performance 4 into further practical/performance studies:
- A subject result of 65% or greater is a prerequisite for MUSI30250 Practical Music 5
- A subject result of 75% or greater is a prerequisite for MUSI30252 Performance 5
- A subject result of 64% or lower: There is currently no further study option available in practical/performance studies
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- perform technically-based repertoire with assured musical fluency;
- conceptualise and develop solutions for advanced technical difficulties;
- evaluate and address technical demands in selected repertoire;
- respond with musical assurance and maturity to the aesthetic qualities of technical repertoire;
- develop best performance practice skills within individual group settings.
Generic skills
Students who have studied this subject should develop and enhance:
- problem-solving skills;
- skills in critical thinking and self-evaluation.

Additional details
- Programs are to be submitted through the online Practical Examination Program Approval form by the Census Date.
- Note: Students shall present a recital examination that is approximately 28 to 32 minutes in duration, including normal pauses between pieces and/or movements.

187 hours with contact as above including sustained practice time in consultation with individual practical teacher.
Additional delivery details
Students are to submit a proposed program of performance pieces for approval by the Head of Area. This is via the online Practical Examination Program Approval Form available from the Faculty’s current students forms page. This must be submitted by the subject census date. This is to ensure students' sufficient time to revise their program if it is not approved.
If students do not submit a Program Approval, they may still undertake the examination, the approval process is an academic measure for students to ensure that they are performing a repertoire that is endorsed by their Head of Area.
