This subject provides students with clinical experience of music therapy. Placements will be under the guidance of a registered music therapist.
The placement will include an orientation to the facility, observation of clients and responses to music therapy interventions, and implementation of basic program design and evaluation. Tutorials will focus on professional development, and experiential group learning.
NOTE - This subject is not suitable for International students residing outside of Australia due to the work placement requirements. Approved placements can only be provided to onshore students. Refer to Subject Notes in Further Information and the Placement Component sections below.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- apply developing observation and reflection skills;
- identify music therapy skills appropriate to specific client populations;
- identify appropriate ethical standards of practice;
- access research literature using IT resources and print journals;
- articulate the role of a music therapist within the multidisciplinary team.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should have developed:
- observation skills for human interaction;
- early analytical skills for interpreting human interaction;
- skills for reviewing literature and applying theory to practice.

Group presentation/workshop. Each student is responsible for 5 minutes of workshop time. For example, a group of 3 students will deliver a 15 minute workshop or a group of 4 students will deliver a 20 minute workshop. Starting week 6 (on campus students). OR as part of the mid-semester intensive study days on-campus (blended learning students).

Coordinator Imogen Clark Mode of delivery Dual-Delivery (Southbank) Contact hours ON CAMPUS DELIVERY - One 2-hour tutorial per week, plus up to 2 days per week in a facility approved by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music throughout the semester and across the semester break. One-hour tutorial with clinical supervisor each week as part of clinical placement. BLENDED LEARNING DELIVERY - See Additional Delivery Details below. Non-contact study time outside of class is approximately 6 hours per week. BLENDED LEARNING DELIVERY
120-160 hours in a facility approved by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music throughout the semester and/or over the semester break. 22 hours as part of intensive teaching in 4 day blocks, the first approximately at or before the beginning of semester, and the second approximately mid semester.
