This subject is designed to extend from the undergraduate training in research design and statistics. This subject will explore common research methods for applied settings. This will include qualitative, quantitative, and experimental designs. The topics will cover: selection of the appropriate research type for particular research problems, the methodological issues of various research designs, sampling, analysis, and reporting of research findings.
In addition to arming students with the knowledge to be able to evaluate and conduct research designs in applied settings, this subject will also assist in designing the research projects of students who are enrolled in the Master of Applied Psychology course
Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Determine the most appropriate type of research for various applied problems
- Critically evaluate research designs
- Determine the most appropriate analysis methods for various research designs
- Describe and explain the range of research methodologies used in applied settings and the challenges of applied research
Generic skills
- Analytic, information integration and synthesizing skills
- Problem solving skills, which should be enhanced through the study of research design and research methods;
- Analytical skills, which should be developed through the evaluation of quantitative and qualitative empirical research literature to enable critical thinking about complex problems;
- Translate aims and objectives for investigating complex problems into measurable questions, hypotheses, findings, and answers;
- Skills in written communication
- Critically recognise and articulate various limitations when investigating complex problems.
