This subject builds on the interdependence of vocal and physical work with character and performance.
Students are introduced to acting methodologies for the exploration of character and text, including foundational work on script analysis and character study. Idiosyncratic physical and vocal habits continue to further develop a functional, efficient and flexible performer’s instrument.
Students explore physical mapping techniques like Laban movement analysis and animal work to develop a vocabulary for the performer’s relationship to space, weight, time, rhythm, energy and impulse. Improvisation and text work build flexibility and confidence with making creative offers and develops students’ imaginative alacrity.
Through various practical activities, students will further develop their skills and capabilities in vocal and physical work with character and performance. In applying technical skills to training tasks and exercises, students will extend their physical, vocal, performative, and collaborative abilities.
This subject is co-delivered to Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Theatre) students.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- evaluate a text for given circumstances, character, objective and action;
- apply an increased flexibility of physical and vocal expression to the creative requirements of a given text or scene;
- employ open and collaborative practice within the class group and creative ensembles;
- apply an autonomous practice addressing identified areas for continued vocal, physical and imaginative development;
- reflect on the development of voice and movement skills in performance.
