This subject expands student’s sense of acting transformation through improvisation and movement. Students employ improvisation processes in order to engage with the dynamic imagery of mask work and clown techniques that draw upon the actor’s innate sense of curiosity and wonder. Students will integrate the physical expressivity, playfulness, and vulnerability of clown and the visceral transformative qualities of mask training in improvisation and character.
Students develop functional movement training through a focus on balance, physical alignment, proprioception, and sensory control in relation to hand-to-hand combat for camera. This work will enable students to address their own idiosyncratic habits that inhibit their ability to further develop an efficient flexible body and responsive imagination. Students will apply their combat training to a recorded hand-to-hand combat scene. By integrating the movement requirements of stage combat training, students will develop a full body relationship to the creation of character.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- develop character within the technical requirements of movement;
- embody an expanded range of physical skills in combat for camera;
- generate and analyse improvisational skills through mask and clown work.
