Students will refine the knowledge, competencies and skills necessary for music performance. Areas to be covered include advanced study of instrumental or vocal technique in order to cope with varied stylistic demands, and specialisation in all related aspects of music performance. Formative feedback in individual and group settings will be provided across the semester.
In order to contextualise their education within the best practices of local, national and international standards, students are expected to work competently and productively both alone and in groups. The subject involves participation in individual lessons, instrument/voice classes, performance class and/or assigned ensemble activities. In order to ensure the highest level of performance preparation, 100% attendance is expected.
Progression Note:
To progress from Performance 5 into further Practical Music or Performance subjects:
- A subject result of 65% or greater is a prerequisite for MUSI30253 Performance 6
- A subject result of 50% or greater is a prerequisite for MUSI30251 Practical Music 6
- A subject result of 50% or lower: There is currently no further study option available in practical/performance studies. Students may complete the degree in the Music Studies major.

Concert Class: Students must apply to participate in Concert Class by completing the form on the Fine Arts and Music Current Students website.
Ensemble: Information for Ensemble Activities can be found on the Ensemble Subjects page in the Handbook. Please refer to each Ensemble subject for details including requisites and additional entry requirements such as audition. Note: Students do not formally enrol in these subjects.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate consistent strategies for technical control, coordination and concentration;
- execute technical exercises and repertoire at an appropriate level with fluency, accuracy, attention to detail and character;
- project a well-shaped, expressive and varied sound across the range of their instrument or voice;
- apply informed judgment, appropriate and individual style to technical repertoire;
- perform music individually (and where appropriate collaboratively) with commitment, confidence and professional demeanour.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should have developed:
- problem-solving skills;
- skills in critical thinking and self-evaluation.
