This subject introduces students to French art song (mélodie) from the classical vocal tradition, focussing on musical and textual analysis, performance practice and interpretation. Students analyse French song texts and scores in their historical, musical and literary contexts.
A strong practical component enables students to apply analytical skills to performance, and to develop stylistically authentic and effective interpretations.
Coaching and peer interactions establish a positive and collaborative ensemble environment.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- analyse French art song texts and scores in their historical, musical and literary contexts;
- analyse the relationship between text and music in French art song;
- prepare and perform French art songs, demonstrating musical style, authentic pronunciation and effective interpretation;
- work constructively and collaboratively with tutor and peers to improve performance.
Generic skills
On completion of the subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate skills in the application of theoretical criteria to practical outcomes;
- demonstrate analytical skills in decision-making for future learning;
- demonstrate a capacity to think critically and independently;
- apply time management skills to rehearsal and performance planning.
