In this subject students will apply theoretical principles outlined in each module to support comprehensive consumer and family/ carer experiences, treatment and interventions in their mental health nursing practice. Students will continue to apply current legal, ethical and policy frameworks to their clinical practice. Students will continue to learn to incorporate knowledge and evidence of biopsychosocial factors influencing consumer and family/carer outcomes to inform their clinical decision making in practice and demonstrate sound clinical leadership skills.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students will demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in mental health nursing by:
- Understand the core documents in the practice of mental health nursing, for example Recognising and Responding to Deterioration in Mental State (ACSHC, 2014).
- Act within the legal and ethical frameworks, mental health law and and professional standards of practice
- Demonstrate the role of lifelong learning, clinical supervision and reflective practice in mental health nursing practice
- Understand the principles of reducing restrictive practices, including the management of clinical aggression and de- escalation techniques
- Participate in the sharing of information with all key stakeholders, including consumer, family/carer and community
- Demonstrate a service improvement or leadership activity that includes planning, implementation and evaluation.
Generic skills
- A capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in oral and written modes of communication
- A capacity to manage competing demands on time, including self-directed project work
- Advanced competencies in areas of professional expertise and/or scholarship
- Advanced skills and techniques applicable to the discipline
- Well-developed problem-solving abilities in the discipline area, characterised by flexibility of approach
- An ability to evaluate and synthesise the research and professional literature in the discipline
- An appreciation of the ways in which advanced knowledge equips the student to offer leadership in the specialist area

5 x Clinical Skills Assessments, 200 words total equivalent, Due between Term 3 week 3 – Term 4 week 9, pass/fail (pass all skills minimum level supervised to pass) Hurdle requirement: Students must pass all 5 Clinical Skills Assessments to pass subject
Written assessment task 1, case presentation, 800 words, due term 3 week 8 (40%)
Written assessment task 2, using a model or framework of reflection, reflect on one of your clinical skill assessments, 1500 words, due term 4 week 8 (60%)
Professional Behaviours (supervision log), due term 4 week 9 (pass/fail) Hurdle requirement: Record 16 weeks of activity (activity type includes clinical supervision/ reflective practice professional development and team meeting attendance)
