This subject will provide students with the scientific basis for cancer and haematology cancer care. In this subject students will explore current and emerging modalities for treatment of specific cancer diagnosis and populations with radiotherapy in specialist cancer nursing care to prepare, support and assess people affected by cancer. Students will learn and advocate for the best practice treatment strategies in the management of site-specific toxicities of radiotherapy. Students will also explore different supportive care needs of people affected by cancer treated with radiotherapy and appreciate the importance of evidence-based interdisciplinary interventions to meet these needs.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate integration of core principles covered in the subject and its pre-requisite, the Foundations of Cancer Nursing, to develop practice knowledge to provide specialist cancer nursing care that addresses actual and potential disease and treatment related health needs
- Demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging modalities for treatment of specific cancer diagnosis and populations with radiotherapy in specialist cancer nursing care to prepare, support and assess people affected by cancer
- Demonstrate an understanding of best practice specialist nursing care in the management site-specific toxicities of radiotherapy
- Identify supportive care needs of people affected by cancer treated with radiotherapy and evidence-based interdisciplinary interventions to meet these needs

- Demonstrate a high level of problem-solving skills to their area of cancer nursing
- Demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and analytical skills
- Feel confident when tackling unfamiliar problems
