Overview

The Pathology Honours program in the Department of Clinical Pathology provides an introduction to the challenging area of investigation of disease at the cellular and molecular level. Students will undertake a full-time research project based in a laboratory within the Department or at one of our affiliated institutions. A student undertaking Honours in the Department will have a strong interest in investigating and understanding the mechanisms of disease. Most students begin their studies in the start-year entry (February), although mid-year entry (August) is also a possibility. The course is only available full time.

Admission requirements

In addition to satisfying the Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours) entry requirements, students are required to have completed stream specific prerequisites. Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this Honours program, students should be able to:

  • Read scientific articles, apply critical assessment and identify major advances and knowledge gaps in biomedical research related to the aetiology, mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Design experiments and select appropriate statistical analyses to address research questions(s) related to the aetiology, mechanisms, diagnosis and/or treatment of disease
  • Demonstrate an ability to master required technical laboratory skills and to generate research data addressing the aetiology, mechanisms, diagnosis and/or treatment of disease
  • Summarise the state of current literature, rigorously present research data and interpret experimental results using scientific writing style in one or several subject areas related to experimental and/or clinical pathology
  • Communicate research and discuss research data and ideas in one or several subject areas related to experimental and/or clinical pathology in both oral and written form
  • Consider ethical and safety issues inherent to laboratory work and biomedical research
  • Demonstrate proficiency in time management for completion of scientific tasks against set deadlines
  • Work effectively independently, and collaboratively under supervision within a research team from diverse backgrounds.
