Overview

A specialisation in Zoology will provide the springboard for students entering careers in many areas of animal biology, from conservation and wildlife management to the biotech, biomedical and bioinformatics industries. Graduates will be prepared for these pathways by developing skills in appropriate zoological concepts, data collection and analysis, and critical evaluation of empirical arguments. This specialisation will provide an understanding of the complexities of animal systems by integrating knowledge from the biology of cells to the behaviour of whole organisms.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of this specialisation, students should be able to:

  • Integrate and apply an in-depth knowledge of zoological concepts to explain the impact of phylogeny and environment on animal physiology, morphology, life history or behaviour
  • Articulate how zoology intersects with other scientific disciplines, evolves with the incorporation of knowledge from a diverse range of sources and is utilised to address current and emerging challenges
  • Curate and critique zoological literature to synthesise arguments and design investigations
  • Evaluate a variety of zoological research methods and utilise appropriate techniques to conceptualise and perform scientific research involving animals
  • Communicate complex zoological concepts and research to diverse audiences, using various communication styles and modes
  • Work constructively, responsibly and respectfully both independently and as part of a team of diverse individuals to successfully complete tasks
