The MPhil is an internationally recognised masters (by research) degree. It is designed for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research.
The normal length of an MPhil thesis is 30,000-40,000 words, exclusive of words in tables, maps bibliographies and appendices. Footnotes are included as part of the word limit.

Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
- a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% in the final year subjects or (University of Melbourne) equivalent; or
- a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of 75% or (University of Melbourne) equivalent; or
- a qualification and professional experience considered to be equivalent;
and
- submit a research proposal
- provide referee reports (except for applicants who have graduated from the University of Melbourne within the last 5 years);
- have obtained the endorsement of a prospective supervisor.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- prior academic performance and, if relevant, professional qualifications;
- performance at interview;
- quality of research proposal
- understanding of the research question to be explored;
- motivation and capacity to complete the course in a timely manner;
- relevant prior research and/or professional experience; and
- suitability and availability of supervisors
- referee reports.
3. The selection committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Selection and Admission into Graduate Research Courses Policy.
4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, UoM band 7is required

Assessment may include the outcomes of tasks completed in collaboration with other students.

Intended learning outcomes
Graduates of the Master of Philosophy – Education will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced theoretical knowledge and understanding of current research developments and debates within a specialised area, able to identify a knowledge gap.
- Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice.
- Design, evaluate, implement, analyse, theorise and disseminate research that makes a contribution to knowledge in the research field.
- Plan and execute a substantial research investigation.
- Present a coherent and sustained argument and communicate research findings to specialists and non -specialist audiences.
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the ethical implications of designing and conducting research investigations involving human subjects and a commitment to research integrity and ethics.

Candidates complete a 30,000-40,000 word MPhil thesis.

In the six months prior to submission of their thesis candidates must present their research findings at a public completion seminar attended by their Advisory Committee.

N/A Credit points are not assigned to the research thesis subjects that are offered as part of graduate research courses.

Further study
Graduates from this program are eligible to apply for entry to the Doctor of Education program or a PhD provided they meet the entry requirements and subject to achievement of an H2A GPA.
