The subject consists of advanced studies in computing covering material which is not otherwise available to the student. The details of the topics covered will depend on the course of study selected and may involve substantial system development.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject the student is expected to:
- SILO1 - Have broadened and deepened their knowledge of 1-2 contemporary concepts and techniques in computing and be able to:
- SILO2 - Identify fundamental challenges in computing;
- SILO3 - Analyse and design solutions for problems using advanced techniques in computing;
- SILO4 - Communicate and discuss technical solutions to advanced concepts in computing.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should have the following skills:
- Have intellectual curiosity and creativity, including understanding of the philosophical and methodological bases of research active
- Be able to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution
- Have a capacity for independent critical thought, rational inquiry and self-directed learning
- Have a profound respect for truth and intellectual integrity, and for the ethics of scholarship

Project Proposal - A detailed project proposal of 800-1000 words, due in Week 3, requiring approximately 10-12 hours of work, submitted to the project supervisor.

This subject may only be taken with permission of the Head of Department (Computing and Information Systems), and is regarded by the Faculty of Science as a non-science subject for students enrolled in the pre-2008 BSc or a combined BSc course.
