This subject asks students to reflect on their position in the world through discussing the links between their own lives and those of young people in other global contexts. Students use personal reflection and selected scholarly readings, videos and media reports to investigate how youth are responding to global opportunities and threats in widely different settings, with specific reference to issues of education, work, and politics. Students also think about strategies for strengthening discussion of youth across geographical and social boundaries. The course is driven by student-centred learning activities and is centrally concerned with issues of diversity and inequality.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- identify differences and inequalities between the lives of young people within the UoM and globally;
- understand varied strategies for theorizing and addressing youth inequalities;
- analyse how youth produce and are affected by social change;
- identify strategies for linking up with youth locally and globally.
Generic skills
Upon successful completion of this subject, students will have skills in:
- reading, writing and speaking in theoretically-aware and comparative ways;
- conducting library searches for relevant, critical literatures;
- using a case study approach to explore processes and problems situated in particular contexts, relating information to conceptual arguments.
