After completion of this subject, students will have the knowledge and skill to perform and interpret focused clinical ultrasound and procedures of commonly encountered pathology of the abdomen including gastrointestinal system (excluding the renal system) and how to write a focused ultrasound report. Students will perform, interpret, write a report and submit a log-book of at least 15 abdominal and gastrointestinal ultrasound examinations and procedures on simulators and/or patients with a wide range of pathology and interpret and write a report on an additional 10 online ultrasound studies.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Comprehensively understand the indications, uses and limitations of focused clinical ultrasound in assessment of pathology of the abdomen including the gastrointestinal system (excluding the renal system)
- Perform, interpret and write a structured interpretive report of focused clinical ultrasound for the abdomen and gastrointestinal system on patients and/or simulators
- Perform ultrasound-guided abdominal procedures
- Evaluate the requirements for training, competence, and certification of abdominal and gastrointestinal ultrasound

Vision
Adequate visual acuity is required to perform and interpret clinical ultrasound. A student is expected to demonstrate: Sufficient visual acuity to perform the required range of skills, including reading ultrasound monitors across a bed and interpreting ultrasound images on standard commercially available ultrasound machines.
Gross and fine motor skills
Gross and fine motor skills are required in performing clinical ultrasound. A student is expected to demonstrate adequate gross and fine motor skills to perform focused ultrasound whilst avoiding injury to patients, colleagues and self.
