Chartered Institute of Building
Students who are admitted into this course and successfully complete all course requirements are accredited with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Intended learning outcomes
Graduates of the Master of Architecture / Master of Construction Management will demonstrate:
Knowledge:
- A knowledge of design based on architectural history, theory and contemporary practice.
- A knowledge of current practice contexts, including environmental, technological, regulatory and project-delivery systems.
- A knowledge of research and design-research methodologies and methods including empirical and research methods drawn from the sciences and humanities relevant to the discipline of architecture.
- A high level of technical understanding of the design of buildings and associated construction processes and solutions.
- An understanding of a broad range of management theories, including their practical application in the delivery of construction projects that meet the client's cost, time, aesthetic, functional and operational requirements.
- An understanding of how projects are evaluated, structured and delivered in terms of risk allocations and contractual obligations.
- Ability to research, analyse, evaluate and discuss a wide range of construction technologies and management strategies applicable to the practice of construction management.
- An understanding of the principles and practices of managing, motivating and leading people who work in construction project teams.
Skills:
- Develop and evaluate a design concept that demonstrates the exercise of theoretical reflection, critical choice, imagination and professional responsibility, through the exploration, testing and refinement of different technical and aesthetic alternatives.
- Evaluate and research traditional and alternative construction methodologies and processes.
- Produce a design that demonstrates an appreciation of economic factors, environmental issues, social and cultural issues, building systems and materials.
- Generate design and contractual documentation that clearly conveys information to both specialist and non-specialist audiences and that enables a design project to be realised.
- Generate contractual and construction documentation for building projects in order to inform construction workers, managers, consultants and/or clients of their roles and responsibilities and project performance; avoid conflict, manage risk and monitor project progress.
- Plan and undertake construction-related activities associated with various building types and systems; synthesise complex information then plan, organise, lead and control a construction project to completion within cost, time and quality parameters.
