This subject will support Teacher Candidates’ ability to recognize the value of multimodal literacies in early childhood settings, and critically reflect and conceptualise how multimodal literacies can operate as a decolonising force in early childhood settings.
This subject will support Teacher Candidates’ understanding of the value of multimodal literacies including linguistic, spatial/visual, kinesthetic, oral, and aural, and environmental/Place. Specific emphasis will be given to how multimodal practices of teaching and learning can be implemented to decolonise the early childhood curriculum, enabling the inclusion of multiple and diverse ways of making meaning as daily teaching practices. The following frameworks will be addressed in the subject include the Early Years and Learning Framework, Victorian Early Learning and Development Framework, and The Australian Curriculum.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, Teacher Candidates should be able to:
- Critically reflect on literacy practices and illustrate how multimodal literacies can be implemented in early childhood settings.
- Design and enact diverse multimodal literacy learning ecologies that are respectful of culture, belonging, and diverse knowledges, and that foreground Indigenous Worldviews and sustainable practices.
- Incorporate new technologies as part of multimodal literacies to enrich meaning making and communication of ideas in contemporary times.
- Elucidate the value and practices of multimodal literacies including linguistic, spatial/visual, kinesthetic, oral, and aural, and environmental/Place.
