A series of weekly seminars examining artist writings, methodologies and research methods. Students will develop their own critical and reflective voice in writing that addresses their major Studio Project. The subject is run as a reading group and workshop. Discussion is focussed on critical methods and arguments demonstrated in the reading materials oriented towards developing individual artistic research.
This subject contributes to a research pathway for the Master of Contemporary Art.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- critically evaluate selected artists' writings and research methodologies;
- locate and critically analyse appropriate references, plan and structure a research paper;
- display an advanced ability to identify and critically reflect on issues through writing about their own major Studio Project;
- analyse, interpret and evaluate student's own artistic practice in relationship to selected works of art and theoretical texts;
- present an original articulation of the interdependence of theory and practice in individual student's field of practice.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students will be able to:
- communicate in a clear and persuasive manner, verbally and in writing, their analysis, interpretation and evaluation of works of art;
- direct and organise their own research and investigation into topics of relevance to the development of their artistic work, and test the outcomes of this research and investigation.
