In this subject, students will learn about patient centred care and measurement of patient reported outcomes. Students will critically evaluate quality of recovery that extends well beyond the hospital discharge, the concept of real-time recovery feedback and the use of clinical ultrasound in the extended perioperative period. Team-based care and leadership issues, as well as consent, power of attorney and advanced care directives will be assessed. Cumulative assessment of the entire course’s content will be evaluated by completion of a practicum consisting of electronic logbook of 50 clinical cases in the perioperative environment.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Appraise patient reported outcome measures in the perioperative setting
- Appraise patient centred care as a model of perioperative care delivery
- Appraise team based patient care extending to post hospital discharge
- Appraise the concept of real-time recovery feedback and critique its role in perioperative care
- Evaluate value-based care and the cost and consequences of incomplete recovery
- Evaluate the clinical utility and cost-benefit analysis of perioperative ultrasound throughout the perioperative period
- Evaluate the role of the perioperative position as team leader
- Critique issues of consent, power of attorney and advanced care directives pertaining to the perioperative period
- Integrate Quality of Recovery principles into clinical case studies
- Complete and critique a clinical audit practicum of 50 clinical cases involving Postoperative recovery using the PostopQRS
